RELEASE NOTES
1.1.0 (Feb 10, 2024)
A minor update with a few usability tweaks here and there, plus integrated search.
Public Features
- Now incorporates OpenStreetMap's Nominatim location search engine. The search currently does not return fuzzy matches ("Hvannagil" and "Hvanngil" return different and mutually exclusive results).
1.0.0 (Feb 2, 2024)
Initial release to the public!
After weeks of development and testing, the initial release of my scouting service front end is finally ready. The map is actually only a tiny part of what I am building, with much more yet to come or already available to a limited audience. Ultimately this will be a whole suite of tools specifically for location scouting and researching photo / film situations.
Public Features
- Sunrise, sunset and sun elevation for any location on earth, at any date, at a glance.
- Sunrise and sunset times automatically shown at local times.
- Incorporates NOAA's World Magnetic Model to provide geomagnetic bearings for any point on the globe. Super useful if you plan to set up time lapses and want to use your compass to align your shot precisely.
- As you move about or change dates, the URL automatically updates to a shareable link for the precise view you have. So sending a map view and date, or bookmarking for later use, is immediately available!
Pro Mode Features (in closed beta, public release later this year)
- Project based access control
- GPX track display with automatic geolocation of linked YouTube videos, 360° panoramas and regular images
- Sun path overlay on 360° panoramas with adjustable azimuth correction
Note that sunrise and sunset times from differnet services are calculated with slightly different thresholds (does sunrise begin when it is 0.83° under the horizon? or 0.20°?) which may account for differences of up to a few minutes at high latitudes. See also this Wikipedia article.
